How do I know if I should post bail for someone?

For many, it's a late night phone call. The ringing brings dreams to an end as a worried voice enters the ear of the freshly awaken. The conversation that follows is often brief, but it usually surrounds a single phrase and question, "I'm in jail, can you post bail for me?" or something along those lines. The person on the receiving end of the phone call will no doubt have many more questions regarding the circumstances, but when it comes down to it, they must answer the questions, yes or no.

So how do you know if you should post bail for a person who has reached out for your help. One thing is certain, you must be able to completely trust them. Answer these questions about the person to better judge their ability to be trusted to not skip bail and leave town, which could leave you with a large fine.

Is this person employed?

Studies show that people who are gainfully employed are much less likely to skip a day in court than those who are not employed or move regularly between jobs. Steady employment is a good sign that this person won't leave town unannounced.

Does this person have a good home?

Another thing to be weary of is if the person does not have a normal place to sleep. If they jump from couch to couch or are in and out of housing there is a greater chance of them missing their court date.

Does this person have a criminal history?

If this person is constantly in and out of jail chances are that their bail amount will be quite high because even the court knows there is a bigger risk of them fleeing.

What is their crime?

Obviously some crimes are more heinous than others, so it is important to take note of what actually occurred. A person who may have committed a serious crime is shown to be more likely to flee if released on bail, while those who found themselves locked up for something that occurred during a long night on the town are much more likely to take responsibility for their actions.
